Can I Take the New York Pre-Licensing Course Online?

Yes!  Assuming you meet the requirements mentioned above, you can now take a New York pre-licensing course online. All in all, it only takes five hours to complete.

The course is available to you 24 hours a day 7 days a week, so you don’t have to be online at any particular day or time. You simply register and then access your course from any device that has internet access. You can log in and out as needed and the course saves your progress.  The DMV does require that you complete the course within 30 days after registering. While each course covers the same basic information, the delivery may be slightly different in terms of the amount of video, how they validate your identity during the course, or test your retention of the information with either final exams or quizzes.

However, unlike the classroom course, you will not receive a certificate of completion. Instead, your completion of the course will be reported electronically to the DMV. They will then update your record. Once this is done, you can then go ahead and make an appointment, online or by phone, for the road test. Note:  It can take up to 48 hours for the completion to show up on your driving record and your completion is only good for one year.
