How does the course work?

The Tennessee Department of Safety (TDOS) officially calls it a Driver Education Course; however, most know it as a Tennessee traffic school course.  It is four hours long and can be taken by drivers in Tennessee who have been given the option by a court to take a traffic school course to keep a ticket off of their driving record or by drivers who received a letter from the TDOS stating they are eligible to have the points from a ticket removed from their record.

ATTENTION:  This course is not an 8-hour Driver Improvement Course, which can be ordered by the Department of Safety for drivers who have exceeded certain point thresholds on their record.

The details for how the online TN traffic school course works are below:

  1. Register: Enter your information to create your account, pay, and then gain immediate access to your course within minutes!
  2. Complete the Course: The State of Tennessee requires that a traffic school course be four hours in length. Our course has six units, which contain a mixture of text, videos, and animations. It is accessible 24 hours a day / 7 days a week, and you can log in and out to complete all or a portion of the course as your schedule allows from any internet-enabled device (ex. PC, laptop, tablet, or smartphone).
  3. Pass the Unit Quizzes: The course DOES NOT have a final exam. Instead, there is a short multiple-choice quiz at the end of each unit that you must pass (70%) to proceed to the next unit. You receive multiple attempts and the option to review the unit if you have a failed attempt.
  4. Completion Certificate: After your successful course completion, a certificate will immediately be made available in PDF format for download / printing. You will need to submit a copy of the certificate to the appropriate authority (court or Department of Safety, insurance, or employer) depending on your reason for taking the course.

IMPORTANT: We DO NOT report completions to any court or to the TN Department of Safety.  It is your responsibility to deliver a copy of the certificate to the proper authority per their instructions before any appointed deadlines.

As a state-approved course, it must follow specific regulations set by the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, which includes:

Content Verification: The course will test comprehension of the course material by requiring you to pass a short multiple-choice quiz at the conclusion of each unit. There is no final exam.

Identity Verification: As an approved course, it must check that the person who registered is the same person who is taking the course. We do that by requiring that you set up ten identity validation questions during the course registration process. During random points in the course, you will be asked one of your ID questions and your answer must match what was given to the same question at registration. State regulations require that you answer at least 70% of the ID questions correctly to successfully complete the course.

Completion Certificate: You will receive a certificate of completion in PDF format when you pass the course. The certificate can be downloaded, saved, and/or printed as needed. It is your responsibility to deliver the certificate to the proper authority before any appointed deadline depending on the reason you took the course (court, Department of Safety, insurance agent, or employer). In Tennessee after you get a ticket, you are typically given instructions to contact the court / county to properly get it taken care of. One of the options that is typically given is to take a Department of Safety approved 4-hour traffic school course to keep the ticket from going on your record. This is a great option because it will keep your record as clean as possible and makes you less likely to receive additional penalties due to tickets in the future.

Once you have the proper permission, you are set to register and complete the course. After passing the course, you will get the certificate of completion, which you will need to turn to the court / county before the deadline date they set for you. TicketSchool DOES NOT report your completion to the court for you. Once you have turned in your certificate to the court and met any other requirements, your ticket will be dismissed, preventing it from being added to your driving record.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT start or complete the course without first notifying and getting permission from the court. Not every driver and ticket are course eligible. Some courts do not allow drivers to take traffic school, or they require that the course be in a live classroom format. If you are eligible, the court will grant you permission to take the course, typically collect a court fee, and set a deadline date for you to turn in the course completion certificate.

The Tennessee Department of Safety will now send you a letter notifying you if you are eligible to take a state approved driver education course (a.k.a. traffic school) to have the points dismissed from a ticket that recently made its way to your driving record. This benefit DOES NOT dismiss or remove the ticket. It just reduces the points from the ticket (up to five points) from your driving record. This is a great benefit since it allows you to keep your point total as low as possible to avoid the possibility of further penalties (license suspension or revocation) should you receive future tickets or have at fault crashes.

The Department of Safety allows you to take advantage of this option once every four years for a ticket and you must successfully complete the course within 90 days from the date of your violation that you want the points dismissed for. If you decide to take the course for this benefit, it is important that you mail a copy of your course certificate to the following address:
