Is this online pre-licensing course approved by the New York DMV?

Yes, our New York Online Pre-licensing course (also known as the “5 hour course”) is approved and licensed by the New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Who is eligible for the 5-hour Pre-licensing course online?

You must be at least 18 years of age and hold a valid New York learner’s permit to be eligible to complete the 5-hour pre-licensing course online.  If you already completed a driver education course through a high school, college, or driving school, and have a valid MV-285 certificate, then you DO NOT need to complete a 5-hour pre-licensing course prior to scheduling your driving test.  If your MV-285 has expired (you did not apply for your driver’s license within 2 years of receipt), then you are still required to complete the 5-hour pre-licensing course.
IMPORTANT:  You must have your plastic New York Learner’s Permit to register and have your course completion successfully reported to the DMV.  Temporary paper permit information will not be accepted by the DMV system.  Please wait until you receive your plastic permit with picture prior to registering.

I have my temporary paper permit, can i still take the course?

No.  The New York DMV system requires that you provide the permit number, document number, and expiration date that is on your official plastic learner’s permit to register and to have your successful course completion reported into their system.  Using your temporary paper permit information will cause an error when we attempt to report your completion and could require you to retake the full course.  We know you are anxious to schedule your driving test and get your driver’s license, but please wait until you have received your plastic permit (with picture) to register.

How long is the course?

While the course is known as the 5-hour pre-licensing course, there are 270 minutes (4.5 hours) of instruction time.  The course is available to you 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  You do not have to be online at any particular time or on any particular day.  Whenever your schedule allows, you can register and access your course from any internet enabled device (smartphone, tablet, laptop, PC, etc.).  You can log in and out of the course as needed.  IMPORTANT: The New York DMV requires that you complete the course within 30 days after you register.

How long do I have to complete the course after registering?  The New York DMV requires that the course be completed within 30 days from registration. If you do not complete the course within 30 days, you have the option to re-register for the course at no additional charge.

Is the entire course online?

Yes, the entire course is online. You will not have to drive to a physical location for any reason to complete the course.  You do not have to be online on any specific day or time.  The course is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Simply register and pay for the course online and then you are free to access the course whenever and wherever you have internet access.

How do I pay?

Payment for the course is made securely via the course registration process on our website using a valid debit or credit card.

Is there a final exam at the end of the course?

No. The course does not have a final exam. At the end of each unit, you will be required to pass a four-question quiz to proceed to the next unit. State rule requires a minimum score of 70% to pass a quiz (get 3 of the 4 questions correct). You will be given three (3) attempts to pass each unit quiz. If you fail the same unit quiz three times, you will be disqualified from continuing with the course and be required to re-register and take the course again from the beginning.  Should this occur, your new course will be free.

Will I receive proof that I completed the course?

There is no completion certificate for this course. Your course completion will be reported electronically to the New York DMV after you have finished all course requirements.  IMPORTANT: It can take 24 to 48 hours for your completion to be posted to your driving record.  Once your course completion is posted to your driving record you are eligible to schedule your road test.  Your completion is good for one year.

Can the course be taken on a mobile device?

Yes. This course is “mobile friendly,” meaning that it can be taken on nearly any tablet, smartphone, or other type of mobile device that contains an Internet browser, as well as any desktop or laptop computer. The course is compatible with most Microsoft, Apple, and Android operating systems. The course is compatible with all internet browsers that are updated and configured to support javascript and cookies should be enabled.

Does the course have to be completed in one sitting?

No. During the course registration process, you will receive a login code which allows you to log in and out of the course at any time from any device with Internet access. The course will automatically save your progress and knows the furthest unit and page you have reached, so that you can pick up at that point the next time you log in.

What should I do if my course completion is not showing up on my driving record?

It can take up to 48 hours for a completion to show up on your New York DMV driving record.  If it has been more than 48 hours, please contact at 1-800-558-9887 so that we can determine and resolve the issue.

How long is the course completion good for?

Your course completion is good for one year.  If you do not take your driving test and move forward with obtaining your license in that year, you will be required to complete the course again.  Your course completion must be valid on the date that you schedule your driving test appointment, but can be expired when you actually take the driving test.

What do I need to do if I lose or forget my login name?

When you register for the course, you will receive your login name (example: John123456opl). If you happen to lose or forget this information, go to the login page and you will see a box that says “I forgot my login.” Enter your e-mail address into this box and then click the “remind me” button. An e-mail containing your login information will be sent to you. You may also call technical support at 1-800-558-9887.

What should I do if I am not receiving my account activation email?

The activation email may be getting blocked or going to your Junk or Spam folder. Please check there first. Otherwise, you can log in to your account and click the link to have your activation email message resent.  If you continue having issues, call technical support at 1-800-558-9887 .

How do I move from one page to another in the course?

Each page has a timer at the bottom that indicates the amount of time that you must spend on that page before you can continue to the next page.  You can spend more time if needed, so you are not required to move to the next page when a page timer reaches zero.  Once a page timer reaches zero the “Next” button at the bottom of the page will activate, allowing you to click it to move to the next page in the course.  If the page timer reaches zero and you do not proceed to the next page within 1 hour, you will be logged out of the course due to inactivity.

Note: If you reach the end of a page before the timer counts down to zero, please be patient and wait for the timer to reach zero.  These timers are set based on the material on the page based on DMV standards, so they cannot be adjusted.

How does your course validate my identity?

As required by the New York DMV you must successfully identify yourself throughout the course.  Our course does this by having you setup 10 identity validation questions when you register and then requiring you to answer one of them correctly each time you login to the course and via a phone call in system during the course.  If you fail to answer 2 consecutive identity validations correctly (either at login or during the course via the phone call system) your account will be temporarily suspended and you will be required to call and speak to a customer service representative to be given your third and final attempt to ID yourself. If fail the third attempt, then you will be disqualified, and you will be required to start a new course from the beginning.   Should this occur, your new course will be free.
