Is this course still required if I am under 18 and trying to get my Florida learner’s permit?
Yes, but only until July 31st, 2025. Starting August 1st, 2025, the State of Florida will require anyone under 18 to complete a 6-hour Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course instead of the 4-hour Traffic Law Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course to get a Florida learner’s permit. Nothing is changing for first time drivers over 18 as they are still required to successfully complete TLSAE prior to obtaining a learner’s permit or driver’s license. If you are under 18 and pass the TLSAE course on or before July 31st, 2025, your TLSAE certificate will still be accepted when you go to get your permit for 1 year.
