While many of us might be staying closer to home during the 2020 holiday season, there will still be plenty of people on the roads. People will be out shopping for groceries, buying gifts, and visiting their family and friends at smaller gatherings.
With more traffic on the roads, there is an increase in risks of crashes and other mishaps that can easily be avoided with these driving safety tips for the 2020 holiday season.
1. Take a defensive driving safety course online.
It never hurts to brush up on your defensive driving skills by enrolling in and completing a defensive driving safety course online. If you have a recent ticket, depending on the state and court requirements you may be able keep the ticket off your record or get a point reduction benefit by completing the course too. If you don’t have any tickets, check with your insurance agent, as you may qualify for an insurance premium discount.
2. Slow down when road conditions change.
Rain, snow, ice, and wind can all be problems during the holiday season. Make a point to slow down, increase following distances, and pay careful attention to the road and your surroundings. If conditions worsen and become too difficult to drive in, find a safe location to pull off the road and wait for conditions to improve.
3. Keep an emergency travel kit in your car.
Your emergency travel kit should include warm clothing, a blanket, bottled water, a first-aid kit, a shovel, basic tools, dry foods, ice melt, and other essential things you will want if you get stuck in the snow or stranded and have to wait for a tow truck.
4. Avoid distractions and do not drive if you are drowsy.
Put the smartphone down and put it on silent or use the hands-free technology in your vehicle. Avoid eating or doing other things that take your eyes and concentration off the road. If you feel tired, find a safe location to pull off and take a break. If you are very sleepy, take a nap for an hour or two.
5. Designate a sober driver.
If you plan on drinking at holiday parties with friends and relatives, make sure you have a designated driver who remains sober. If you don’t have a designated driver, consider using a ride-share service, taxi, or spending the night at the host’s home.
6. Maintain safe following distances in heavy traffic.
Holiday traffic can become quite congested. You will want to slow down and maintain a safe following distance, even if you are driving below the speed limit. Doing so will allow you sufficient time to stop if the need arises.
7. Take a break on long road trips.
If you have plans to visit family out of town, make a point to stop every few hours for a break. Get out, stretch your legs, and get some fresh air. Taking breaks helps you remain focused on driving.
