How does the online drug and alcohol course work?

The State of Florida requires that a Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course (a.k.a. Florida drug and alcohol course or first-time driver course) must be four hours in length.  Our course is available 24/7 from any internet-enabled device, including smartphones.  The course has eight units and is a combination of text and videos.  At the end of each unit, you will be required to pass a short multiple-choice quiz with a score of 80% or higher, with unlimited attempts. Once you have successfully passed the course, we will provide a downloadable PDF certificate for your records and electronically report the completion to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV).

As a state-approved Florida TLSAE drug and alcohol course, our program must follow the regulations set by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV). These requirements are as follows:

Content Verification: We test your knowledge of the course material using end of unit quizzes. At the conclusion of each unit, you are required to pass a short multiple-choice quiz. You must score 80% or better to pass. There is no final exam, and you receive an unlimited number of attempts to pass each unit quiz.

ID Verification: Our course uses ten (10) yes/no questions that you set up at registration to verify your identity. You will be required to answer identity questions at random as you move through the course and your answers must match the answers given during registration. Three (3) incorrect ID questions in the course will result in a course disqualification.

Completion Certificate: After you successfully complete the course, you will immediately be given the opportunity to download your completion certificate in PDF format. You can save and/or print your certificate for your records. It is advisable that you print a copy and bring it along with your other required documents to your driver license service center appointment if attempting to get your permit or license. If you are taking the course for court ordered reasons, then you will want to turn in the certificate to the appropriate court authority before any appointed deadline per their specific instructions.

Reporting to the Florida DHSMV: Your course completion will be reported electronically to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV). Once reported, State of Florida DHSMV personnel will be able to lookup your TLSAE drug and alcohol course completion. We still recommend that you bring a copy of your certificate with you to your driver license service center office appointment, if applying for a learner’s permit or driver’s license.

Course Expiration: We provide 180 days to complete the course from the date of registration. If your account runs out of time, you can always re-register and contact us to have the payment transferred to a new account. Once the course is completed, completion certificate does not expire.

State Approved: Our company is licensed by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) as an approved “course provider.” We are listed under our corporate name of Driver Training Associates, Inc. (DTA). Being an approved course provider is very important because it means that our course meets the state standards and that our company is authorized by the state to successfully report your completion into the Florida DHSMV system so that you get the proper credit. This ensures that when you head to a driver license service center to apply for your learner’s permit or driver’s license, your completion will be found in their system, and that our completion certificate will be accepted if you are taking the course for court ordered purposes.

History: Our company has been offering driving and safety related courses across the U.S. for over 45 years and has been approved in Florida for over 30 years! We are a company you can trust.

Superior Service: Unlike many of our competitors who make it nearly impossible to find a phone number or to get an actual person on the phone, we offer live customer support from 10AM to 6PM EST Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, at (800) 558-9887.

The Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course (a.k.a. drug and alcohol course, first time driver course, or learner’s permit course) is required to apply for a Florida learner’s permit. You are eligible to take the drug and alcohol course after your 14 th birthday, but you must wait until you turn 15 years old to apply for your permit. Getting a Florida learner’s permit allows you to legally get behind the wheel (with certain restrictions) on public roadways and to practice your driving with the proper supervision. If you are under the age of 18, you are required to get a learner’s permit and log 50 hours of supervised driving (10 hours of which are at night) before you can apply for your driver’s license and take the driving skills test. While getting a permit to practice driving is still advisable if you are 18 or older, it is not a requirement to apply for a driver’s license.
The Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course (a.k.a. drug and alcohol course, first time driver course, or learner’s permit course) is required to apply for a Florida driver’s license, if you have never held a driver’s license in another state, country, or jurisdiction. If you are under 18 and already have your learner’s permit, then you have already satisfied the TLSAE drug and alcohol course completion requirement. You do not need to take the course a second time to graduate from your learner’s permit to a driver’s license. While still advisable, if you are 18 or older you are not required to get a learner’s permit and do any practice driving. Whenever you feel ready to pass the driving skills test, you are eligible to apply for your driver’s license, but you will be required to successfully complete the TLSAE drug and alcohol course since you did not do so previously to get a permit.
If you are under the age of 21 and had your license suspended as a result of a Blood Alcohol Level (BAL) violation (between .02 and .05), you will be required by the State of Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) to complete a TLSAE drug and alcohol course in order to reinstate your license on a hardship status. A hardship license status means that you are only allowed to legally drive for “business” or “employment” purposes. Our site will immediately report your course completion electronically to the DHSMV, so there is no delay meeting any required deadlines. It is always advisable to follow up to ensure your completion was received successfully by the DMV. If you are submitting a hardship application form to the DMV, it will be important to include a copy of the completion certificate.
The Florida Traffic Law Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course (a.k.a. drug and alcohol course) may go by different names depending on the reason you are taking it. Some courts may refer to the course as a Drug, Alcohol, and Traffic Awareness (DATA) course, and require you to complete it for certain drug and/or alcohol related offenses. If you have been court ordered to complete a 4-hour TLSAE, drug and alcohol, or DATA course, then our course will fit that requirement. Printing out the electronic PDF completion certificate at the end of the course is extremely important if you are court ordered since you must turn in a copy of the certificate to the clerk of the court per their instructions before any court appointed deadlines.
You will be prompted to pay as part of the online course registration process. We accept all major debit or credit cards (Visa, MC, Discover, and AMEX).
We stand by our products and service. So much so that we offer a full 30-day money back guarantee! Successfully completed accounts or those that were disqualified for ID validation are not eligible under this policy.
