When they get a traffic ticket, many people opt to pay the fine so that it goes away quickly. Unfortunately, however, paying the fine may seem like the quickest resolution, but it is important to know that doing so will ensure that ticket goes on your record. There are other options in many cases.

When Is Traffic School a Good Option?

It is important to mention that each state is unique in how they handle traffic tickets.  Some states handle tickets through the courts where the judge can provide various options and determines if a ticket goes on your driving record.  Other states have a points system that requires all tickets to go to your driving record and then drivers have options to reduce their points to avoid additional penalties.   We will be speaking in generalities for the purposes of this article.  We encourage you to check your ticket for the various options available to you. Typically, you will have three main options when you get a ticket:

  • Pay the fine
  • Contest it in court
  • Go to traffic school / defensive driving

As mentioned, most of the time (depending on the infraction) you will have the option of taking defensive driving for a speeding ticket or other moving violation (aka Traffic School).  Doing so in most states will keep the ticket from going on your driving record.  This is a major benefit since it will prevent the points from the ticket from going on your driving record.  Keeping a clean driving record is helpful since getting multiple tickets on your record can trigger insurance rate increases and in some cases surcharges from the state.

What happens when you complete the course?

It depends on your state.  Some states allow us to report the course completion to the state electronically.  In other states we must print a physical certificate for you and mail / email that to you.  In other cases you will get a pdf certificate that you must print and turn in to the court by a deadline.  It is very important that you follow the specific instructions provided to you by the court / state and meet any deadlines that are set.

You must, however, make sure to do all this within 90 days of receiving your ticket. Failure to do so will result in points being added to your record and the information will be sent to insurance providers.
